Greetings Calafia!

What a busy month we just had! We would like to take a moment to thank everyone who attended Potrero War. It is like a large family reunion for us Calafians, and so many cherished memories are made at this event every year. We offer our incredible thanks to the hard working event staff, particularly THL Magge Rose, THL Margeret Kerne and Lady Arnora Tryggvadottir. The staff for this event put in an incredible number of hours before and during the event, and they handled the many challenges that came up with patience and grace. Thank you as well to the many, many volunteers who gave time out of their war to make this event happen. It takes thousands of man hours to put on this event, and we couldn’t have done it without all the wonderful support from the populace!

Now that war is behind us, we turn our attention to the next big event for our Kingdom, Coronation! Our beloved King Mansur and Queen Eilidh will be handing over the reigns to Their Heirs on June 6th in Wintermist. We would like to encourage everyone who can to make the journey to bid farewell to our wonderful Monarchs and welcome in our Prince and Princess, Athanaric and Sigridr. This is always a bitter sweet time for Caid, and we are so grateful to King Mansur and Queen Eilidh for such a wonderful Reign.

As we move into the summer months, the hectic schedule slows down a bit and gives us a brief respite before fall tourney season picks up. This is a great time to work on your arts, polish up your armor, make some new gear, and get about those projects that you’ve been putting off. In July, the Iron Brigade will be putting on the annual Comic-Con Demo, followed closely by Arts in the Park on August 1. This is one of our biggest opportunities to show San Diego what Calafia is all about so let’s focus on putting on the best show we can!

And as one last reminder, at our June Council meeting (Thursday, June 18th) we will be polling on which of the candidates — THL Seraphina or Baron Tristan — will be our next seneschal. Please do try to make it to this meeting if at all possible, and send us your feedback about the candidates to curia@calafia.org .

Thank you, Calafia, for being the best Barony in the entire Knowne World!

In service to Calafia,

Summergate Anniversary and Longsword Tournament is this Saturday, April 25th at the beautiful Buddy Todd Park in Oceanside (Buddy Todd Park, 3000 Mesa Drive at Parnassus Circle, Oceanside 92054). Calafia’s Arts and Sciences Point is extending an invitation for the populace to come relax under the shade of the Arts pavilion; whether you have a project in the works, or just want to hang with other Arts & Sciences minded people, come on by!

Besides bringing any largesse you have for Their Excellencies to Arts and Sciences Point on Saturday, don’t forget to bring your looms as we are also hosting a Cardweaving Solar on Saturday! Weavers of any skill are invited to warp up and join us for a day of weaving! This isn’t just for card weavers; if you have a loom, bring it! Curious about card weaving and always wanted to try it? We will have a few loaners on site for folks to try their hand.

We are postponing the Quilt Competition we were planning on hosting at Summergate until after Potrero. This will give everyone more time to finish their pieces at their leisure and enjoy the lead up and flurry of activity before War! We will resume the rest of the competitions after May.

Yours in Service,

Lady Euginia in rauða

Greetings, Calafia!

We hope 2015 is treating everyone well so far as we enter the second month of the new year already! The spring is shaping up to be a busy one as usual, with tourney season kicking off at Gyldenholt Unbelted in January. The turn-out for the tournament was truly impressive – 67 fighters in the list! Congratulations to all the fighters who entered; Calafia was very well represented! And congratulations in particular to Lord Duncan Rose who was recognized for being most chivalrous on the field for the day. Huzzah!

And we started off the Calafian tourney season with the Canton of Pol Na Gainmhe to celebrate their anniversary. The generosity and hospitality of the Canton were truly amazing as always, and the companionship of our Eastern friends was warm and most welcome. Thank you all for organizing such a lovely day, and to Lady Raven for the delicious repast. We are looking forward to next year’s anniversary already!

The month of February promises to be a busy one as we continue Calafian tourney season with St. Isidore Anniversary. The weekend after that we will be traveling to Starkhafn to enjoy the very first camping Talon Crescent War! We encourage all Calafians who can attend to do so – help support our friends in Starkhafn as they put on this first full-blown war. We know better than most just how much work it takes to put on an event like this, and we know Starkhafn will greatly appreciate all the help we can give. Following Talon Crescent, we will be returning to Angels to celebrate the arts and honor our own Queen Eilidh at Her Festival of the Rose. If you are able to, please do make the journey up to celebrate with Queen Eilidh. This is always a truly special event for any Queen, and we want to make it a very magical one for this great Lady so near and dear to our hearts!

Though it may not seem like it, Potrero War is coming up quick. The war staff is coming together and beginning to plan. If you are interested in participating on war staff, please contact the event stewards THL Magge Rose and THL Margeret Kerne. They are always looking for deputy stewards who want to get more involved and learn more about what it takes to put on this event. No prior experience is required. If you have any questions about what is involved in being on staff, we would be happy to discuss them with you. Being part of the Potrero crew has always been one of the most rewarding experiences we’ve had in the SCA, and we encourage everyone to give it a try at some point – this year could be your chance!

We are looking forward to a year filled with exciting new opportunities, changes, and times spent with the most wonderful populace of Calafia!

Long live Calafia!
